Capacity Building
Digital security is vital in a world where the sophistication of cyber-criminals and their relentless attacks are unparalleled. However, this is often neglected in the civil society organization scene. Security Matters (SecM) is established to build digital security capacity for civil society organizations and human rights defenders.
The Trainers Network
We came out with the idea of setting up the Trainers Network as there is a lack of Southeast Asia-based resources and networks supporting digital security concerns of activists and technical experts that can conduct threat analysis and design countermeasures for activists on the ground. Also, we wanted to solve challenges posed by remote support delivered by existing actors in addressing digital security on the ground.
Besides training and keeping local civil society organizations and human rights defenders in touch with each other, the Trainers Network ought to bring together trainers; to share experiences concerning best practices, recent issues, and continuing professional development.
Training of Trainers
The Training of Trainers aims to design and cater a community-friendly training content while enhancing the existing trainer’s capacity for digital security.
Security Matters leverages collaboration and availability of existing resources and capacity to develop specialized and localized training modules and support for activists in the region.
Threat Assessment
HRDs usually work in complex environments where many things will be happening almost simultaneously with each event impacting one another. HRDs need information not only about issues directly related to their work but also about the positions of key actors and stakeholders.
SecM conducts threat analysis studies on priority countries and develops countermeasure manuals and security playbooks for local actors. We also engage with and/or recruit researchers and other technical experts to support the development of local expertise in threat analysis.
Digital security threats that happened in Asia are documented and analyzed. Routine feedback and newsletters will be provided to activists on current threats and prevention methods.
General Guideline on Organizational Digital Security and the Digital Security Manual
Security Matters strives to develop organizational-specific operating procedures and digital security manuals for high-risk and at-risk organizations and individuals to perform risk assessments and define security rules and guidelines that suit their particular situations.
